I daresay that the Verizons and Comcasts of the world had failed to fulfill their promises to their customers, as well, but nobody seems to do anything about it, and the consumers continue to be ripped off. At least if my local government messes things up, you can vote the bastards out come election time. The Verizons and Comcasts are scared to death that they’re going to lose their warm fuzzy broadband monopolies or worse yet, they might actually have to provide service and support at a level that begins to have some semblance of value.

Andy Kessler, writer for the WSJ, just wrote an blog piece about the fight between the City of Philadelphia and Verizon over Wi-Fi for the city that you might want to take a look at. http://andykessler.com/wsj_philadelfi.html
He completely misses the point that cities do not have any place entering into consumer industries like internet access. Where would it stop? Wi-Fi, then VOIP, then fixed line telephone service, then state-wide offered cellular.

Most cities cannot fulfill their current promises to residents. They should not be entering into fast moving technologies that they don’t understand and will cost them hundreds of millions of dollars.
